So who founded Mormonism? The angel Moroni or Joseph Smith?
To a Morman, neither... it was Jesus Christ, since they believe their religion is a 'restoration' of the original Christianity.
To a non-Morman, does it matter?
been wondering about this lately.... what proof (outside the bible, of course) do we have for the "historical jesus"?.
in my earlier days (post jw to "born again christian") i remember reading that the one thing that differentiates christianity vs. "all the others" was that we had secular historical proof that there was a man that was called jesus, who died on a cross and was resurrected.
now i am wondering just what that proof is/was?

Again, I find it hard to believe someone who raised the dead, started a religious movement, performed miracle after miracle after miracle such that pretty much every Jew in Jerusalem wanted him dead, managed to completely not be mentioned in contemporary accounts.
I find it hard to believe that some people would believe that a religion with over one billion adherents and continues 2000 years after it's inception was started by a non-existant person.
For whatever reason, as far as having a lack of 'physical' or 'historical' proof beyond the scriptures, the FACT is millions of people have a belief in Jesus while millions of others have an abiding FAITH in Jesus as The Messiah... meaning a exchange that goes beyond the cerebral notion ... an 'experience' if you will. And for those that haven't experienced that, nothing less than a cerified copy of a birth certificate from the Roman state (with pictures) will ever convience them otherwise. This debate will rage on until The Second Coming, or the utterdarkness of death. However, only one arguement will be provable at that time.
Have you experienced Him? Only then can you know, that you know,
that you know...that He exists.
I'll drink to that...IN SPADES!
i am wondering , with the world situation that way it is, could we be living in the last days?
putting religion, and personal beliefs aside, are we are the brink of all of this coming to an end?
geneocide, could happen because of what mankind is doing to the earth.
correction: my quarter says "IN GOD WE TRUST" (the nickel says GOOD)

I always figured that when we took "in God we trust" off the money
I just looked at my shiny new quarter and it still has IN GOOD WE TRUST....whew...that was a close one.
now i know money is a touchy subject, so if you feel discomforted by these questions, don't answer!.
remember those articles that basically said "some have asked an appropriate amount to contribute for items such as the cd, bound volumes etc.
this crap usually sells for $x in the shops."?.
Having been an accounts servant for a couple of years, and auditing the books for a few more, the society is only getting about $60 per month from our entire congregation.
Excuse me for being ignorant, but not ever being a JW, I was wondering how a congregation survives on $60 a month? Is that typical? My JW friend told me they pay tithing...is that not true? If so, is there a percentage?

I mean, it's not like we don't have any kind of record about what when on in this part of the world during this period of time. We do, and someone running around raising the dead and starting a new religion surely would have gotten front page news SOMEWHERE.
Maybe it was a busy newsday and the reporters were covering other stories...or, maybe it got reported, but "buried" (excuse the pun) in the "Lifestyles" section, or maybe it was frontpage news, but all the records were in the Great Library of Alexandria when it caught fire and burned, along with a lot of civilization's histories and discoveries...that in itself is a fact.
i am disfellowshipped.
whoa.
i just wrote that as the first thing.

I thought about how in a business transaction, if they were all friendly and nice, how it would all of a sudden change if they (ooo heebee jee-bees now) found out I was df'd (aghast! eeek). You are talking about JW's right? Because I have never been one, and before I found this board if someone where to say to me "That person over there is a disfellowshipped JW"....I would think "whatever"....it meant nothing to me, who cares. Now, after finding this board, if someone made the same statement, I would think "Woo Hoo...someone's escaped! You Go Girl!!!
i don't know if anyone has said this before, but i wanted to say a big thank you to all of you non-jw's who have put up with us and stayed with us and helped us out so much.. i know offhand: jerome, detective, and hawkaw.
i know there are many many more of you, but please step up here and take a very well-deserved bow and get a very well-deserved hand from me and from others..
salute!!!!!
Gee, the title of the post scared me. I thought you were going to ZAP all the non-JW's, or make them join the JW's and then DA themselves to make them 'official' WHEW. I tremendously enjoy this board's comments on a variety of topics. I originally came here to try and figure out a JW friend...thanks to this board, most things have been explained. You're a GREAT group!
i'm disfellowshipped.
my sister is really into this place and told me to come to this board and read everyone's comments.
we've all had pretty similar experiences it sounds like.
WELCOME GLORY!! I've never been a JW but enjoy most of the posts on this board. I have a JW friend for the past several years and I'm trying to figure out what makes this person tick. They bring up religion constantly, but when I ask some tough questions, this person won't talk to me for a couple of weeks, like I was possessed or something. I've been enlightened by this board tremendously.
As for me, I been to several Christian Churches and am a total believer in the existance of an Awesome God, One that people are always trying to explain (or unexplain) according to their own biases.
quoted below is the testimony of an ex-jw (one of the posters here) who faced the draft in the '60s.
notice the form of "alternative service" that he would've been required to do had he been drafted.
not civilian, but as one who would work in a military hospital ... which would be aiding the war effort -- a breach of one's neutrality.. .

You've done an excellent job of demonstrating that you haven't a clue as to what that text means. Shall I be your teacher and disclose to you its ACTUAL meaning? How can YOU "clue" him in to its actual meaning.... a clue from the clueless - I don't think so.
